welcome to quilt market...

we awoke to a picture perfect day in salt lake city. sunny and warm.

the view from our hotel window was clear for miles. the snow capped mountains in plain sight.

polly kirton was kind enough to come sit with sarah at the hotel while i went for a quick scope of the layout.  there were certain people that i wanted to make sure we met.

as i walked through the outer hallways of the convention center, i was super excited to see they had chosen purple carpet. i took it as a sign the day was going to be perfect.  once i determined the aisles that we needed to visit, i headed back to the hotel to get sarah and polly.

sarah was simply overwhelmed when she looked in and saw all the color before her.

we just stood there for a few moments to take it all in.

and then we entered the doors.  our very first journey into the world of market.

the best of...

what a life!!! sarah and i spent the day shop hopping through the southern salt lake area.  there are many shops to choose from in the utah valley.  we'd like to share our top three...

pine needles in west jordan. we stumbled upon this one by taking a wrong turn. so glad we did. they had me at the bird house hanging outside the door.

and the inside certainly did not disappoint.  sarah was a bit surprised and not to happy to see that huge quilt hanging overhead in central park. i'm thinking she was under the impression she had an exclusive with her friend kate. i assured her she was not to worry. she does have an exclusive. in lyndhurst, ohio:)

our next stop was planned from the minute we knew we would be coming to salt lake city. i've been following this shop for sometime, even before we had decided to open a store. i just knew there would be an element of fun here...

sure enough. nadine does it so right at material girls quilts in south jordan. madonna music and all. so worth the drive.

our final stop of the evening was such a delight. quilts etc located in the historic sandy, utah area. such friendly women working here.

the front room was adorable. then we walked into the back room. can i just say...wow. you know i love the white cabinetry, but how about all that fabric?!?

and that was a wrap for today. sarah told me her bones were hurting and managed to find this great little alcove to park it for a few moments. we had such a great day. we are moving downtown tomorrow.  stay tuned...

we've landed...

yikes!!! it's freezing in utah. like need a winter coat freezing. slight problem. we left them in cleveland. oh well. it's been almost two years since i have flown. who knew this neat little screen now becomes a television. i watched hgtv most of the way while sarah was thrilled to have the disney channel. all while being served hot chocolate chip cookies. frontier airlines out of the akron/canton airport was a stellar idea. i'd highly recommend it.  now i think a nap is in the immediate future.

modern workshop...

by oliver + s has arrived...
at first glance it might seem like simply a trendy and contemporary collection of fabric. yet it's deisgner, liesl gibson, was inspired by wiener werkstatte, a circle of artists and crafts people based in vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. hop on over to the blog of oliver + s to read more and watch a video of liesl talk about this fascinating story.

we have the entire collection for your enjoyment displayed in our front room. if you click here there is also a free pattern to download.

i must once again thank crystal of frivolous necessity for the amazing samples. click on the top photo to take a closer look at the tiny detail work on the pillow.  i just love it and know our customers do too as i have  already been asked many times if it can be purchased.  the answer is no, not today.  however, i'm sure there will come a time when we will conduct a sample sale in the future. i will announce it on this blog first, so be sure to follow along.

this next picture i lifted off of liesl's personal blog. it very nicely shows both of her collections working together so well. city weekend + modern workshop.

love the hexi's too. still my favorite shape to make. we have some city weekend still in the store.  hurry though, it all will be a part of the big pre-quilt market sale at $5.00 per yard on 5-5, 6 & 7.

magical moments...

it was a grand day in the house of fabric...

first, the queen arrived with her entourage:) what a grand way to spend a birthday...shop hopping at quilt stores. such great friends and customers. we did get a chuckle when sarah asked the birthday gal how old she was...and after her truthful reply...sarah says..."whoa" with great inflection as if to say...wow that is old.  i guess i need to work on age diplomacy with miss sarah:)
.
then we had another truly magical moment.  one of sarah's blog followers came to visit. from several states away. such a surprise...

so, so sweet to see the interaction between the girls. their extra third chromosome on that 21st pairing, just seems to make a natural bond all the more precious.  you can see cute more pics over on sarah's blog.

priceless rewards...

if you were anywhere near the shop this afternoon, you probably heard our screams and shouts. you would have thought we hit the mega lottery.  actually, we did.  now i've never actually won the lottery before, so i have nothing to compare it to...yet the feeling of supreme happiness that sarah and i experienced when we saw this...

truly cannot be defined.  i can't imagine there is a greater happiness. meet jax and arina. you can read more about the two here. some of you reading this have watched our quilts go together. they start with nine blocks that sarah and sari work out on the design board and then they sew the blocks together. i help pin the sashing and then sarah sews it together. once that part is complete, off they go to diane at longarm legacies for quilting.
.
our goal is to have a quilt ready for each reece's rainbow kiddo that comes home to their forever family this year.  arina is the first to receive hers. as soon as we knew she was coming home we started sewing her squares together using pink, pink and more pink from kate spain's first collection called verna...
she is the first girl in a family of four boys so her mommy was so looking forward to girly things. can you imagine this sweet angel living her life in an institution, never having her own quilt or her own family?
.
and we certainly could not forget about her big brother jaxson. so he received his own version of our four square in make life by sweetwater...

mr. jaxson is a cutie of a fellow. he has been through more medical ordeals in his short life than most in a long lifetime, yet he keeps on smiling...which is why we thought this collection would be just perfect for him...he makes life sunny, makes life colorful and makes life beautiful.
.
and finally the package would not be complete without a matching pillowcase in memory of our shining light...kristen ann kirton.

each pillowcase has been lovingly stitched by either sarah or sari or one of our volunteer sewers.  this project has been such a blessing in so many ways and we are just getting started. we already have the next quilt boxed up and ready to ship.
.
please, please, please...if you know a family who has opened their hearts to bringing home a child with down syndrome through reece's rainbow, let us know by sending us an email to jhillely@gmail.com.

strawberry butter...

what do you get when you combine buttercup and strawberry fields?  why...strawberry butter of course. we just received our precuts of strawberry fields by fig tree quilts. i was also able to get more charmpacks of buttercup. i have always loved how joanna figueroa designs her collections to work so well with each other.

we have a beautiful lap quilt on display using mill house inn completed by crystal at frivolousnecessity. so many customers request this pattern that i am going to link to it right here. it is in a pdf format so after you pay $5.00, it will be sent to your email. our newest addition is in buttercup. the wall hanging/table runner stitched by stefanie at ohsewfabulousquilts is an easy and clever way to use one pack of 2 1/2" x 5" precuts found in the moda candy bar box.

i have had a few questions lately about etsy. first, no i have nothing for sale there. i have been asked why i don't use local creators to make samples. i do. they are probably sewing as we speak. i also really love supporting other artists on the etsy site. each person has a unique talent and product(s) that they offer, which means the store has on display many different ideas and skill levels to observe and inspire our customers. i also love the connections i am making. i'd like to share a little note i received recently from one seller...

Hello! Thank you so much for your purchase. I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you your new table runner has been packaged up and is on it's way to you in Ohio! This is my second sale on etsy and I must say, it was just as exciting to me as the first! I hope you enjoy the item.

it reminds me of the tag line that always follows suzanne's posts...encourage one another. i love that philosophy and try to live by it myself. oh speaking of suzanne...she has just moved into the most amazingly gorgeous brand spanking new store...yes, strawberry patches has a new home...go check it out. hmm...there's reference to strawberries again...did someone say ice cream?

sunny sunkissed...

so surprising was the weather this weekend. we hit 78 in cleveland. for northeast ohio, that is a near record this time of year. it was so nice to have a little sunshine peeking in on our newest window display...

sunkissed has moved right up to the front row. sweetwater really hit it with this collection. it has been our best seller to-date. how do you like our version of hoppy, floppy and loppy? sarah and i fell in love with these little bunnies the minute we saw them. and then we turned the corner of her favorite target and spotted the adorable pink polka-dot rain boots. too bad they didn't come in our size:)

and how about the adorable bibs. five in all. another great find on etsy at the site of babymaeboutique. the print is directly from sweetwater's etsy site.  this next picture...

does not begin to do justice to these fine creations.  the easter egg wall hanging. omg!!! another masterful creation from crystal at frivolousnecessity. her letter work is the best i've ever seen. if you are in the area, it is worth stopping by just to see it. but wait. see the nine block on the wall. it too is a crystal original.

now i have to tell you about the quilt in the middle. i found it on etsy in a general search using the word "sunkissed." sarah loved it, so we bought it. then we got an email from the seller at quiltedthimblecottage. turns out jenn has been following our story for some time and was thrilled that we had found her. it seems everyday i am simply amazed at the power of this internet.

one final shot to show you sunkissed on display. i know i say this every time i write, but this time no lie. for real, half that stock is already gone.  sunkissed...we love you.

anxiety to ataraxia...

as worrisome was my night, daylight brought new freshness. i stood for longer moments than usual in my closet, pondering which suit to dust off. i decided i should match it to a bag i could carry. a bag from the store that is. never before have i tried to balance a business suit with a quilted creation.

i arrived in the parking lot to find aimee waiting to assume her duties for the day. that eased my mind considerably .after just a few minutes of discussing cash register logistics, our first customer arrived. i made a few introductions and then stepped upstairs to the office. when i returned to the store, aimee was already handling things like a pro. i never doubted that. soon i said goodbye and jumped in my car. not too far down the highway, i found myself settling into a peaceful place.

not even a stand still traffic snarl peaked my anxiety. i put in a favorite cd and cranked the volume louder than usual. as i continued to drive i felt more and more relaxed. i haven't driven this highway for several months. before the store, i was heading to columbus every chance i could get. owning a retail shop changes things. at least for me it did. the weather was perfect, so i opened the moon roof. the warmth of the golden sun felt exhilarating.

before i knew it, i had arrived in franklin county. early. very early. i had wanted to stop at a fabric store that i had been hearing about. now i had plenty of time. the instant i walked into sew to speak, i was not disappointed. so cute. a vibrant funky kind of store. a woman immediately came over and commented on the bag i was carrying. that made me feel good and confirmed it is the small details that can make a difference. her name is anita, turns out she owns the store. we chatted for a short time. i shared that today was my first day away from jellen's and i was a little nervous about that. she totally understood. i purchased some fun fabrics from japan, purple of course, and a few leather purse handles.

next i drove a bit further down high street to the glass thimble. i've been shopping at this store since i first arrived in columbus for graduate school back in september of 1981. the store has not changed really. as i walked around, a flood of memories came back. i recalled the fabrics i had purchased to complete a quilt for my parents twenty-fifth anniversary, some blue calico for a neighbor's first baby, and many yards of the brightest fabrics i could find to take with me to choices, the shelter for battered women where i worked as the house manager during the midnight to eight am shift.

i looked at the clock and realized i had time. time. time to retrace my footprints. i drove to my old house. it looked the same mostly. i drove through the bumpy alley as i had done so many nights long ago. i kept driving until i had reached my destination. i pulled into a parking space noticing the signs of springtime all around. buds just about to open in the flower beds. i recalled the night those same beds were swarmed with members of the columbus swat team. i had been alerted by the police in cincinnati that an abuser had stolen a truck and they believed he was heading for the shelter. and he could be armed.

i had quickly gathered all the woman and children and had ushered them safely to the basement. a few had grabbed their quilting project from a class i had held the previous afternoon before leaving their rooms. there in the dim and musty cellar of this home, turned safe place, we stitched together. sharing the fright of the situation. i remember sitting on a small step cradling the woman who was being stalked. as i vividly recalled that evening, i suddenly felt ashamed. how could i have been so afraid? anxiety should not come from leaving a quilt store in the hands of someone else. anxiety is the fear these women knew. fear so great they had no choice but to flee their home for safety.

i turned to look toward a window on the side of the building. it was in that room that we gathered every week. there were always a few new women each time, as this was a short term shelter. i recalled the evening i persuaded debbie to join us. her arm was so badly wounded from being attacked by a pit bull while she was tied to a tree by her abuser. she initially did not want to come, afraid that she would not be able to sew one handed. we sat side by side, she pushed the needle down through the fabric and i would reach under to push it back up. together, we worked to complete her first quilt block.

i needed to go if i was to make my meeting on time. as i got closer to the ohio state university campus, more and more students were walking about. i wonder how many of them will have the opportunities that i have. the chance to make a difference. the opportunity to realize what is truly important in life. as i walked out of the parking garage and first glanced at stillman hall...

i felt at complete ease. i felt free from any anxiety. i felt euphoric really. how blessed i am, i thought to myself. then i stepped off the elevator and was greeted with congratulatory praise from other members of this committee i sit on. i wondered how they knew what i had just experienced. how could they know. as soon as i opened the meeting folder i saw...

the story had already been written. in fact, it was already up on the ohio state university website. from anxiety to ataraxia. in less than twenty four hours. a journey thirty years in the making. lead by a very divine plan.

separation anxiety...

the feeling was dreadful as i walked out last night. so frightening, i turned around to take one last picture...

i was so nervous. just the thought of leaving was making my heart have rapid palpitations. then around midnight, my laptop crashed. or so i thought. that sent me into a minor panic attack. my husband and son would probably describe it as more major than minor. i tossed and turned all night long. i couldn't sleep. i don't ever remember being like this with my children when i left them for the first time. sorry kids. but leaving the store for the first time. well...it was anxiety provoking for sure.

i'm not sure why really. i was leaving it in very capable hands. did you see yesterday's delightful daisy quilt? well the creator, aimee, was the one watching the store. only the reports coming in say she was working very hard, not just watching. thank you aimee. i so very much appreciate it. i'm still in columbus and need to get on the road. i will tell you a little more about my meeting in the next post. for all of our customers who came in today, thank you. thank you. i'll see you soon.

oh one last thing before i go. sew to speak in columbus. delightful. a must stop.

closing early today...

i'm stepping out...early. heading to columbus for a meeting and hopefully a quick stop here. therefore the shop will be closing at 5:00 pm today.

i apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. i will be happy to stay open late on friday if anyone needs a late night fabric fix. please just call the store and let me know. 440.684.9830.

delightful daisies...

before the store opened, i had a vision in my head of what each display would look like. i made a functional laminated lay-out of the floor plan where i plotted the color lines, the seasonal flow and desired samples. and then we opened. and those plans changed. why? because i heard things i wasn't expecting. like...do you have black and white fabric? i quickly reworked some space and soon we not only had the fabric, it had a place of it's own. then i spotted this book...big fun with a little fabric...by amanda herring. of quilted fish fame. i loved, loved, loved the design on the cover. i so wanted to make that quilt. one small problem. i. have. no. time.

enter aimee doershuk. she had been working in another quilt shop in northeast ohio that sadly closed recently. so she came to see me and asked if i would like her to make us a sample. she too was drawn to this book. so we agreed this was it. one tiny issue. i. have. very. small. walls. not to worry. aimee worked her design magic and condensed a pattern for big fun, into little fun. i love it!!! thank you aimee:)

kate and crate

how lucky can a girl get. i have kate delivered to my door step and i have crate just around the corner. if you're just joining us, i am speaking of our favorite designer kate spain and the oh so trendy home dec store...crate & barrel. last evening i set out to purchase this adorable plate. i had a few colors to choose from, yet with purple being my favorite color i just had to select this one. i also found this perfectly matched potted fushia gerber daisy and i just love that it never needs watering. have i ever mentioned i was born without a green thumb? i decided the pot needed just a little sprucing up though.
a quick change of blades on the rotary cutter...

and this plain ordinary pot...

now looks like this!!

such a great spring time addition to our central park display. oh speaking of central park. did you catch martha stewart the day she used kate's animal print. how awesome!!! you can watch it here and read all about kate's take on the fame. i left kate a comment that i think martha is to her as she is to us!!! and most of our animal prints are gone so hurry to get the last of it.

oh and just one more thing...

kate's christmas collection 2011...flurry...the precuts are due in tomorrow. i already have six on reserve, so you might want to hurry for that too.

just one star...

if you have been in our shop, you already know that we have been working on projects for our troops for several years. so when the idea of just one star was first introduced, we knew instantly we would like to participate.

the idea is this...many hands make many blocks. moda is asking for quilters around the country to make a star block. the blocks will then be sewed together, hopefully into 100 quilts, to be presented to wounded soldiers on flag day. we have precut kits, including directions, available at no charge to you. simply stop in, pick up a kit, stitch it together, then return it to our store by april 23. we will take care of mailing them for you.

if you would like a tutorial, minick and simpson has a great one posted on their blog. click here to follow along.

we would like to take this opportunity to welcome home ryan erney, who just completed his first tour of duty with the united states marine corps in afghanistan. so glad you are home safe and sound. thank you ryan for your dedication to protecting our freedom.
